History of The Freedom Source
The Freedom Source was born out of the frustrating search by one family to find drug and alcohol addiction service providers in the Birmingham Metro Area. After months of scanning the internet, asking for help at their church (which graciously agreed to pray but could offer little counsel) and challenging school leadership to help but to no avail, Lynn and Steve Briggs felt lost and despondent, that there was little help available.
Through the grace of God, after 12 years of dealing with their son's dependency, they finally found a facility which met his needs and helped him begin the path to recovery. They have also found support groups who provide continuing counsel in dealing with the daily challenges that attend addiction and recovery. They are thankful that their son makes steady, continuing progress and is prospering today.
Because of their longing to give back to addicts and their families, they created The Freedom Source as a means to fill the void of locating providers in the Birmingham Metro area.
Our immediate goal is to bring all the possible providers together in one hub of information in the five county Birmingham Metro Area: Walker, Jefferson, Blount, Saint Clair, and Shelby counties. Ultimately state, regional and national resources are planned to be available on the website as well.
Our hope is to be a conduit of information where in just a few clicks you will gain access to information to help you identify the resource you may need. We are not trying to provide all information on this site but rather give you a snap shot of each provider and then direct you to them for more detailed information.
We have also responded to what we feel may be your major questions, including an extensive dictionary of
slang, "street" terms, a special article
"Is My Child at Risk?" that can be very helpful as an early warning system for concerned parents and friends observing curious or deteriorating behavior and linkage to other websites for more detailed information on specific drugs and treatment alternatives.
As we have pursued the development of the Freedom Source website and identified many wonderful organizations and ministries dedicated to helping the addiction community, we found a void of community wide conversation focused on reducing or eliminating the problem at its source. Consequently we have envisioned (
The Addiction Coalition) to bring together community leadership, including providers, educators, church counselors, and government leaders as well as civic foundations and other funding organizations, to address the systemic issues and provide direction to creating a community agenda to dramatically reduce the impact of addiction.
